Pengembangan Karakter di Era Pascamodern
Abstract
Karakter—yang sering dikaitkan dengan kepribadian—itu tidak akan ada dan tumbuh-kembang dengan sendirinya terpisah dari sekitar. Baik kepribadian (personality) maupun karakter yang berwujud pada tingkah laku yang ditujukan ke lingkungan sosial, keduanya relatif permanen serta menuntun, mengerahkan dan mengorganisasikan aktivitas individu. Karakter berkaitan dengan kebajikan-kebajikan yang ditopang oleh sebuah kepercayaan kepada hukum moral yang lebih tinggi. Dalam menghadapi budaya pascamodern kita harus kembali kepada titik pusatnya yakni kebenaran absolut dan universal. Kebenaran yang absolut dan universal itu berasal dari Tuhan Yang Maha Esa seperti yang diterima dalam Kitab Suci Agama. Kebenaran Tuhan Allah adalah sumber moral yang transenden bagi pembentukan karakter. Untuk hal ini etika pramodern begitu meyakini dan memegangnya secara kuat. Di sisi lain, karena karakter itu sangat berkaitan erat dengan hidup dalam kebajikan pribadi maupun kebajikan publik, dan itu harus dibangun di atas kebenaran yang absolut dan universal.
